108 Miles Down - 84 Left to Go

Reeth to Richmond, 11 miles

We had a quick, pleasant walk to Richmond today. It was our least strenuous day so far and we made it to Richmond with an afternoon to spare.

Sleeping above the pub in Reeth was just okay. (We’ve become a bit spoiled with our previous accommodations!) They stopped playing country western music downstairs around midnight, so at least we were able to get some rest.

This was our last day in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park, so we were trying to take it all in. Although the sheep and cattle farms are still very abundant, the scenery today was more wooded than we’ve seen before.

We passed a 12th-century priory today, (unfortunately it wasn’t available for touring) and then ascended a flag-stoned path that nuns had built around the same time.

The Nun’s Steps are said to have been built by nuns to travel from the priory to the village of Merrick. Allegedly 375 steps, but I didn’t count.

We arrived in Richmond in the early afternoon, but couldn’t check into our B&B until 4. No problem for us… we‘re easily entertained!

With time to spare, we found a tea shop and enjoyed Afternoon Tea.

We were positively stuffed after this meal of sandwiches, cakes and scones.

We met up with several Trail Friends for evening drinks in a pub. The group had been quite a bit larger before tonight, but others have shed off for a day of rest or to take a different path. It’s been a marvelous group to walk with and we’ll miss their companionship on the last portion of the trek.

Thats all for now. We’ll spend the next two days walking towards the North York Moors National Park. Check out Day 9 gallery for more photos.

Cheers!
