2024 MESA Bike Tour Day 1

61 Miles

We’re at it again! Five more days of peddling, but this time it’s not just Bob and me. It’s a band of eleven road-biking Rotarians, riding for a good cause.

MESA stands for Medical Equipment and Supplies Abroad. It’s an Ohio based non-profit that collects second hand medical equipment and ships it worldwide, to locations where it’s badly needed. Last year, MESA sent out 32 shipping containers full of equipment, including many to Ukraine. The Rotary Bike Tour for MESA is the primary fundraiser for MESA’s operations.

The annual ride has been taking place for years, but it’s only our second year to participate. Bob & I are touring with the same group that we met last year. We’re all from Rotary District 6600 in Northwest Ohio.

Our ride began this morning in Tiffin. Before starting out, the Tiffin Rotary Club gave us massive breakfast burritos.
We had a lunch break in Upper Sandusky, next to a sheep and goat show at the county fairgrounds. There were sheep walking around that strongly resembled poodles. I’m kicking myself for not getting pictures of the sheep!
Gorgeous day for riding! High 80’s.
We break for candy shops.

Marion Ohio was our final stop of the day, where we met our Rotarian host families that were putting us up for the night.

After showering, we all met up for dinner and got to know our wonderful hosts.

One of my favorite parts of the MESA ride (and any multi-day bike ride that Bob & I do) is that we get to experience places that we’ve never been and would probably not go to on our own. Tomorrow we’re on our way to Bellville Ohio. It’s guaranteed to be a hot day with 1200 ft elevation gains.

That’s all for tonight! I’m looking forward to sharing tomorrow’s stories with you!
