Day 10: Tribil di Superiori to Cividale Italy

Updated: Sep 21, 2024

Although it was a long day on the trail, it felt easier overall.

Day 8 on the Alpe Adria Trail!

We had a pleasant and uneventful stay at the Tribil di Superiori hostel—until someone took the two breakfast rolls set out for us before we even made it to breakfast! We’re still a bit resentful, but I guess that’s what happens when you’re the last ones to breakfast at a hostel. (We had a similar experience about a week ago when a bunch of kids took every last dessert at a hostel in Austria.)

Our private room was just fine for us. Before it was a hostel, this building was a school house.

We hit the trail early, knowing it would be a long day. This morning, we walked with a solo hiker from Belgium. It can be tiring walking alone, especially on poorly marked trails, so he seemed happy to have company. Our trails were mostly forested paths today.

We climbed to Castelmonte (as the name suggests, a castle on a mountain), surrounded by tightly packed houses, shops, restaurants, and a church. We stopped for lunch here.

Now, we’re officially in the foothills of the Alps. The terrain has changed, as has the temperature. It hit the 80s by this afternoon—hard to believe we were trudging through knee-deep snow just a few days ago!

We arrived at our stop for the night, Cividale, by early afternoon.

Cividale is an ancient city with a Roman fort dating back to 50 BC. We’re hoping to explore more of this lively city’s history tomorrow, but tonight, our focus was on food and drink.

After settling into our fantastic apartment, we headed out for a drink, followed by dinner at a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant called Al Monastero.

The Bib Gourmand is a Michelin rating that recognizes good food at reasonable prices, though not quite at star level. We enjoyed the rustic atmosphere

We indulged in local wines, plenty of protein, and finished with a boozy, decadent dessert (the tiny shot of plum liquor is poured over the traditional cake that’s filled with spices, pine nuts and raisins)

We briefly wandered the Cividale City Center before dinner. Bob commented that this town looks like a Disney set. It’s gorgeous!

Tomorrow, our host is bringing us a breakfast basket, which we’re very excited about. We’ve got a shorter 8-mile walk to our next stop, Breg via Golo Brdo, where we’re staying at a “tourist farm”. Tune in tomorrow to learn what a tourist farm is all about (we don’t know either!).

Buonanotte amici!
