Day 12: Breg to Šmartno Slovenia

Dober Dan (good day) from Slovenian wine country!

Our 10th day on the Alpe Adria Trail. Seven stages left!
We had a long 7 hour day, but it wasn’t terribly challenging. We meandered through valleys and across ridges, with occasional stops in rustic villages. Way back in the distance, we could see the Slovenian Alps.
We walked past a lot of grapes and olives along the trail today. Maybe others are aware of this, but raw olives straight from the tree taste worse than Blue Elephant Cheese (aka fresh yeast).
We found a coffee shop along our trail and took a break from the sun. It was a warm day.

Along the trail today, we crossed paths with a couple from Holland on bikes. It appears that even the Dutch know about Springfield Ohio. Europeans are well informed on the political situation in the US and are very interested in talking about it.

Our stop for the night is in Šmartno, which is a medieval walled city that’s considered a cultural heritage monument (per Wiki). Our inn is a 500 year old building with plenty of medieval charm.
After cleaning up and doing a little trail laundry, we wandered the town and found a gorgeous spot for a glass of local wine.
At dinner, we selected a tasting menu and it was spectacular! It began with 40 month aged prosciutto…

… minestrone soup, gnocchi, egg soufflé, and veal chop with mashed potatoes. Sadly, there was absolutely no room for dessert!
We retired to our room and Bob found live Sunday football (Colts v Bears), commentated in German. It’s pretty entertaining.

Tomorrow we walk along to Cormóns Italy. It’s a 9 mile trail.

Caio friends!
