Erie Canal Day 5

Updated: Jun 11, 2024

6 miles today/185 miles total

We had a nice relaxing day!

Breakfast at the B&B was great. Good food and good company. We shared breakfast with a family from Germany. They’re in the States to pick up their daughter who just finished up a year as a foreign exchange student in Nebraska.

The family gave us a great idea for a future bike ride: The Elbe Cycle Route that starts on the Polish/Czech Republic border and ends at the North Sea beyond Hamburg. 600 miles of Europe on dedicated bike trail sounds great!

We wandered around Seneca Falls for the morning, enjoying stories and exhibits at the Women’s Rights National Historic Park.

Seneca Falls is the inspiration for the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Although the 1947 movie was filmed mostly in Hollywood, the scenes with the bridge were filmed in Seneca Falls.

After leaving town, we peddled to Cayuga Lake, found a lakeside restaurant called Wolffy’s and proceeded to gorge ourselves like we’d been biking all day… not the 25 minutes that it took to get there.

We’ll burn off that huge meal tomorrow!

We made our way to a state campground and set up camp in a beautiful spot.

This pic makes it look more secluded than it is. Lots of weekend campers around us, having a grand time

My bike’s derailleur (gear shifter for the non-bikers out there) needed a bit of adjustment after a minor topple from a complete standstill. My ego is mostly unscathed - my bike wasn’t so lucky!

We spent the afternoon learning how to do field repair and adjustment on my derailleur. Success, thanks to YouTube and a quick call to our bike shop back home!
After the bike repair, we took it for a spin down to the lake and enjoyed the shoreline.

It was a pleasant, low key recovery day, which is good because tomorrow is going to be a long haul - 60 miles is our anticipated distance.

At day 5 of our trip, we’re over the hump. Only 4 days to Albany!

No gallery pics today.

Good night!
