Erie Canal Day 8

Updated: Jun 11, 2024

42 miles today/330 miles total

We had a comfortable night at a hotel in Rome and hit the trail mid-morning. Rome has a gorgeous path that weaves through town and makes bike travel easy.

It was pleasant day on the trail, but each passing day is getting hotter.

Bob takes a call from the trail. He was negotiating with a marina on our campsite for the night.

Any time we pass through Utica NY, it’s tradition to stop for Chicken Reggies and Utica Greens.

Mondays are rough in Utica… we could only find one open restaurant with Reggies on the menu. These were not the best we’ve had, but we were still happy to find them!

Sometime after Utica, we were on an abandoned part of the canal and blew past a strange homemade onion dome tent that was fashioned like a tall rocket (think Jules Verne). There was a man standing below it in a makeshift astronaut costume and a woman was taking his picture. We HAD to stop and investigate!

It was a sculpture created by art students! I tried to be discreet and only managed to get a pic of the top of the rocket ship.
Our campsite tonight is at a marina in Little Falls NY.
It was a scorching afternoon! And there’s a food truck DIRECTLY across the street with soft serve!

Little Falls is a cute little town that’s 95% closed on Mondays! We did manage to find the only open watering hole in town.

Locals enjoy conversing thru-bikers in these little towns. We’ve met such friendly people everywhere we’ve stopped.

We were hoping to camp tomorrow night (our final night on the trail), but there really aren’t that many camping facilities as we get closer to Albany, so we booked a room in Amsterdam NY.

That’s all for today! Adios
