Erie Canal Day 9

Updated: Jun 11, 2024

44 miles today/370 miles total

It was a hot muggy day on the Erie Canal!

We had an early rise today… some restless kids needed to play soccer at 7 at the marina where we were camped. (In their defense, they were in the middle of a 2 year boat trip with their family, and any time they found a grassy spot they jumped on it!).
Before hitting the trail this AM, we crossed the bridge into Little Falls for a latte and donut. These indulgences stop when we reach the end of the trail!
Gorgeous trail this AM. Steep cliffs on both sides of the path.

Mid day, we met up with a fellow rider who’d stayed at the same marina/camp ground. He’s an environmental chemistry professor in Maryland. Visiting with him made the hot, muggy day go by faster… and we all stopped for ice cream, which also helped!

We made it to our destination for the night, Amsterdam NY. We’re staying in an old 1890’s armory that’s been remodeled as a hotel.

That castle in the background is our abode for the night.

It’s beautiful and bizzare. The decor is in honor of the original designer, who had a thing for medieval artifacts.
The dining hall at the castle/hotel.
Reminds us of an eclectic version of the Excalibur Casino in Vegas.

We found a bar down the street and spent some time snacking and rehydrating.

We had a regional favorite… “Mexican Hots”, which are ground beef shaped into a hotdog, cooked and served with a topping of more meat. The one on the left has a ground hotdog relish on top, the other has a beef sauce. As unappetizing as it looks, we both liked the one on the left best.

Tomorrow is our last day on the trail. We’ll peddle 40-ish miles to Albany. We’re looking forward to resting our saddles and exploring Albany on foot for a few days before heading home.

Tomorrow is Bob’s birthday! A great way to celebrate!

Good night!

Happy birthday Bob ! Greetings to both of you.

ps: I'm amazed seeing how little luggage you're carrying in such trip ! I'd have 2x50 pounds suitcases 🙂
