Last Day on the Trail

Glen Nevis to Fort William, <3 Miles and on to Edinburgh

We’re done! It was a very abbreviated walk to finish West Highland Way this morning.

There’s the “original” trail end…

…and the more iconic trail end at “the sore feet statue”.

The West Highland Way has been a wonderful experience. Much different than the Coast to Coast, but every bit as interesting. We’ve met some fun people along the way and made some great memories! We managed to miss the dreaded midges (for the most part), but found the temperamental Scottish weather near the end of the trail. We’re happy to be finished, but very sad that it’s over.

We caught an Edinburgh-bound train and are enjoying the city for a couple of days before heading home.

We’ve rented a flat that‘s a 15 minute walk from Old Edinburgh. We haven’t been in the same place for more than one night since May 2nd. Its really nice to be non-nomadic for a few days!

We had a good chuckle as we were navigating to our apartment this afternoon. I typed our Airbnb address into Google and we ended up at a place that just didn’t look like the photo of the exterior we were given by our host. We were puzzled. Bob and I don’t always see eye to eye on the best way to “be lost”. He prefers to appear lost and ask for help… and I would rather stubbornly look like I know exactly where I am and eventually figure it out. Today, Bob’s approach was clearly the right choice, as a wonderfully kind man noticed our completely clueless look and asked if we knew where we were headed. We showed him our address and the photo of the front of our apartment. He knew exactly where it was and offered to walk us around the block to the front door. Turns out he’s a neighborhood history buff, so he gave us some local history on the place as he led us in.

Built in the 1880’s. During WWII, the iron gates were removed and used for the war effort. Our flat is on the 3rd floor.

Very nice place to land for a few days!

It even has a washer! No more washing laundry in a sink on this trip.

We found a nice Nepalese restaurant nearby and enjoyed some fantastic food.

No more pub grub for me!

We tracked down a grocery store with some sample-sized Scotch. We had a very good one and a VERY bad one.

Fantastic…

Bad, bad, bad

We plan to skip tomorrow‘s post but will give an update on our time in Edinburgh on Sunday evening. We head home on Monday.

Good night!
