What a full day! We left Sandusky via Amtrak @ 1 am and arrived in downtown Pittsburgh a little after 5 am. We've always loved train travel, but rarely have the time for it.

Amtrak doesn’t allow bags to stay on bikes in their cargo hold, so we were loaded down in coach!

We had plenty of time to reinstall our bags at the Pittsburgh Amtrak while we waited for the sun to come up.

After breakfast, our first order of business was to go to the Great Allegheny Passage (or GAP) trailhead medallion at Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh.

Not warm.

All along the Pittsburgh section of the trail, relics of the steel mills were artfully displayed. It reminded us of the latest section of the Erie Towpath to be completed in Cleveland, where they celebrate the industrial roots of the city.

Bob was very impressed.

Fall colors on the Yough (pronounced "yawk"), short for Youghiogheny River.

After 34 miles on the trail, we set up camp in West Newton PA. Lovely campground and we have it all to ourselves!

What luck! On our way to grab lunch we spotted a beer trailer which worked out perfectly since
the pizza joint we'd picked didn't serve beer.

Dessert ... more beer and pumpkin fluff. We really burned a lot of calories today. Must replenish!

And the absolute best part of trips like this is the wonderful people you connect with along the way! We had a lovely visit with our new friends Jim and Gay.
We're looking forward to another day on the trail. Tomorrow we're off to Ohiopyle!
