Part 1: Our time in Croatia

Jen Allred

Hi everyone! It’s time to catch you up on the last few days. There are two consecutive posts - this is the first of two. You can click HERE to read part 2.

I’m having some difficulty getting photos to load tonight, so just words for now. I’ll try again tomorrow.

We met up with Bri, Cameron, Elise, and Sean (who were making their own adventures in Italy) for a relaxing stay at a beach house in the quiet little village of Jadranovo, Croatia.

The house was beautiful, with stunning views of the Adriatic, a rather chilly pool and a sauna —perfect for warming up after an invigorating plunge in the pool!

We were fortunate to have one day of good weather while in Croatia, which we used to explore Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Plitvice Lakes is a spectacular natural wonder: 16 terraced lakes connected by beautiful waterfalls. Visitors navigate the lakes on boardwalks, taking in views of the aquamarine water from up close and even crossing over the waterfalls themselves. There are electric shuttle boats for crossing the largest lake, making the park easy to explore despite its size.

It was a memorable experience, and the beauty of the lakes was truly breathtaking!

The next day, we had quite a bit of rain. It let up enough for a couple of walks to the marina and beach. Instead of a sandy beach, it was described as a beach of small pebbles the size of children’s teeth—a creepy description we can confirm!

Bri and Cameron were the only ones brave enough to fully immerse themselves in the Adriatic. It was just too cold for the rest of us!

While most of the crew headed to the water, Elise and I stayed home, reading and sipping Aperol spritz. We’d just discovered we were both reading the same book series, so we were excited to chat about it!

Our little town of Jadranovo had two bar/coffee shops, two pizzerias (both closed for the season), and one tiny but functional grocery store, which kept us well-fed during our stay.

In addition to book discussions and chilly swims, we passed the rainy day with a Farkle tournament (our favorite travel game). Cam and Bri came out on top in both rounds— and had never played before. Beginners luck!

On our third day in Croatia, Bri and Cam headed south to finish their holiday in Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. Elise, Sean, Bob, and I took a day trip (in the rain) along the coast to Rovinj, where we finally indulged in some wonderful Napoli pizzas—something we’d been craving for days. Rovinj is a gorgeous seaside town with cobblestone streets and a Venetian feel. We would have loved to explore more, but the downpour made it tough.

On day four, we said our goodbyes to Elise and Sean, who were heading back to Venice. After all the touring and walking Bob and I have done over the past three weeks, we decided to spend our last few days of the trip in Slovenia—our favorite country in terms of scenery, culture, and the friendliness of the people.

We had another reason to return to Slovenia: we made reservations for dinner at Hiša Franko, a three-star Michelin restaurant in Kobarid.

Tune in for our next installment to hear all about our dining experience!

Ciao ciao,

Jen & Bob
