Slovenian Mountains - Our Happy Place!

Here’s mostly photos with captions from our day…

Dobro Jutro from Solčavsko!
When we walk in the door at the farm stay, a friendly guy greets us with homemade blueberry schnapps . What could be better than that?!
Today we hiked to a small waterfall (or “slap” as they call it here in Slovenia) up the valley from our Tourist Farm and were so happy to be back on the trail. As we reached the waterfall, the trail took on a more mountaineering feel, with cables and metal posts leading straight up the rock. It was fun for a while, but not what we were prepared to do on a simple day hike. We decided to wrap up our 6 mile hike and go explore by car for the rest of the day.
For the remainder of the day we toured the valleys that make up this region. One of our guide books describes the mountains as broken glass jutting out of the green forest- this is the best description we can come up with. It’s completely stunning and different from anything we’ve seen.
Throughout the day we would just stop and gawk at the mountains. A couple of days ago, it snowed here, so the peaks are quite dramatic with a dusting of snow. I don’t expect our pictures can do it justice.
We spotted a hospitable bench along the road and enjoyed some not-donkey salami and cheese. A delicious roadside lunch!
And then we found a tiny little mountain hut at the end of a valley that had souvenirs and schnapps. We sampled the Juniper and the Pear. Both were quite astringent- good for household cleaning!
We made our way back to the tourist farm and enjoyed some wine on our balcony.

Here’s some of the livestock we crossed paths with today:

Tonight we had another great Slovenian platter with 3 meats, rustic gnocchi, roasted potatoes and veggies. Another great meal at the tourist farm!

We have a bit more exploring to do in this region tomorrow and then we’re heading east near the Hungarian border to some of Slovenia’s oldest towns.

Three more days before we head home!

‘Adieo’ for tonight!
