Travel Day to Milngavie Scotland

Whitby to Milngavie, five trains - six hours

It was smooth sailing from England to Scotland, thanks to Bob’s seamless planning.

We got an early start out of Whitby this morning and after one cornish pastie and 5 train connections, we made our way to the trailhead for the West Highland Way in Milngavie (pronounced “Mill-guy”).

…on the road again….

Not a whole lot to report today, other than we made it safely to our very conventional hotel in the suburbs of Glasgow.

We stocked up on granola bars at a marvelous grocery store, and walked every aisle. Walking through grocery stores in different countries is one of our favorite ways to kill time. We found a well stocked bourbon shelf in the liquor section and had to send word back to our bourbon loving friends in Ohio.

Looking forward to an Old Fashioned when we return, but we don’t dare drink bourbon in Scotland!

We found an Indian restaurant tucked away in the Milngavie city center and enjoyed the BEST Indian cuisine we’ve ever had… I’m not exaggerating.

And now on to dessert… Within the last week, two completely independent and seemingly credible sources have strongly recommended that we try a deep fried Mars bar at any given fish and chips shop in Scotland. We happened across such a shop on our way back from dinner, and sheepishly asked them if they could fry up a Mars bar for us. After a chuckle, they were happy to oblige.

It was pretty good, but we don’t intend to repeat the experience .

We’re enjoying how warm and friendly everyone is here. Most people we meet are genuinely curious about Americans and as soon as they hear our accent, they really want to talk. Its been great fun!

Even Bailey the Dog wanted to talk to the Americans!

Tomorrow we have a 12 mile walk to our first stopover. Looking forward to telling you all about it.

Good Night!
